Wallace Golf finishes 6th at Kickoff Classic

Govs travel to Pinehurst, N.C. on September 15-16

DOTHAN, Ala. – On day two of the Wallace Kickoff Classic, the Governors Men's Golf team improved on their day one score to finish sixth out of 17 teams in the fall's first tournament.
The Govs were one of only four teams to better their day one total. Coach Scott Stephens' squad made the greatest improvement, improving on their day one total by 12 strokes to finish the tournament at +42.
"I think for the first tournament of the year, we performed ok," Stephens said. "Obviously we didn't play to our potential which is always disappointing but our guys fought their tails off on Tuesday and gained four positions in the standings. All in all, I was extremely proud of them for not giving up the fight and battling to the end."
Cooper Weeks and Alex Broadaway led the way for the Govs on day two by shooting 73, one over par. With 85 golfers competing in the tournament, Weeks finished tied for 12th (+6) and Broadaway came in at 16th (+7).
Central Alabama Community College finished seven over par to take the team title followed by Eastern Florida State College at 16 over par.
Stephens talked about the level of talent that attended the tournament hosted by the Governors at Highland Oaks.
"This was the strongest field we will see this fall so I am proud of them for what they accomplished."
Stephens feels like the best days on the course are ahead for the Govs.
"We are very limited in playing experience so the numbers don't reflect the true story."
Following the tournament several awards were handed out including the All-Tournament team led by Jamie Smith from Eastern Florida who shot three under par for the two day event. Joining him were Central Alabama Community College teammates Hayden Canary and Jacob Lee at one over, Jayce Hutchens, two over, from Calhoun Community College, and Reid Larson, from Shelton State Community College.
The Govs will travel to Pinehurst, North Carolina and participate in the Stitch Golf/SCC Flyers Fall Intercollegiate Tournament at the Sandhills Country Club, September 15-16.
