Wallace beats Central in opening game of ACCC Tournament

Cliatt Bunts

MONTGOMERY—The Wallace and Central game was close until the eighth inning. Wallace had only managed to score a single run on an RBI single from Evan Taylor in the fourth inning.

Central tied the game on a homerun from Jacob Smith un the fifth. The game remained tied 1-1 until the eighth inning. That's when Wallace broke the game open, scoring four runs in the bottom half to take a 5-1 victory in their opening game of the ACCC Tournament.

Central's' Coby Wiggins had gone toe-to-toe with the Govs Jake Middleton in a near flawless game. But in the bottom of the eighth, Wiggins ran into trouble. He gave up an infield single to Peyton Ryback who went to second on a ground out. Then Makhi Buckley came through with the biggest hit of the day for the Govs. He nailed a solid single to the outfield that gave the Govs the lead with only one inning to pay…
"I just wanted to put the ball in play," Buckley said. "We hadn't been hitting all day. Luckily it found a hole and we scored. I was really hyped after that."

But it didn't stop there. The Govs needed some insurance, and Cason Gleaton provided it. Facing relief pitcher Connor Hebson, Gleaton uncorked a bases clearing, three-run double that provided the final margin of victory.

"First couple of at-bats my timing was a little off," Gleaton said. "With adjustments and trusting my plan, I just went up there and found a pitch I could drive. It was a big win for us. I wanted to win as much as the rest of the guys."

"This was a really big win for us," head coach Ryan Ihle said." We got some timely hits especially from Makhi and Cason. Middleton pitched a hell of a game for us and Rapp came in and closed things out. We've just got to keep it up now and we need to start earlier. But this was a big win for us."

That's because the win keeps the Govs in the winner's bracket. Wallace will now play the winner of the Enterprise State and Bevill game at 5 pm on Friday.
