Seven innings just wasn't enough. In game two of the Wallace and Enterprise doubleheader Saturday afternoon, it took extra innings before a winner was determined. Enterprise scored four runs in the top of the eighth inning and then had to hold on for a 4-3 win.
In game one, seven innings weren't needed. The Govs jumped on to the Boll Weevils early and blew out Enterprise 12-0 in five innings.
The second game was the epitome of a good old-fashioned pitching duel. The Govs'
Mason Koczwara threw seven scoreless innings, while the Boll weevils Aiden Wright tossed five scoreless before turning the game over to his relievers. Together, it was scoreless through seven and would be decided by the bullpens
.
Clint Lafferty entered the game for Wallace in the top of the seventh. After getting the first out, things quickly went downhill from there, Ronan Fowler walked and stole second base. He then scored on a solid single to centerfield by DM Lieux. After another walk to Matt Snell, Lane Griggs singled to right field to plate run number two. Jabe Boroff was then intentionally walked to load the bases. After getting a ground out, run number three scored when Lane Griggs was hit by a pitch. Boroff scored the fourth run on a wild pitch, giving the Weevils a four-run lead.
That seemed like plenty, but the Govs didn't go down without a fight. Cole Hewett walked
Anthony Zarzana to open the bottom of the seventh and he was quickly replaced by Braden Warren who promptly walked pinch hitter
Jeremiah Blair. After striking out Cason Gleaton,
Jackson Cliatt doubled to left field to plate the first run. After getting a popout,
Drew Shiver delivered a two-run single to rightfield, cutting the lead to a single run.
Peyton Ryback was then hit by a pitch. With the winning run now on base,
Evan Taylor came to the plate. Taylor hit a line drive shot, but unfortunately it was right at the second baseman and that ended the game.
There was no drama in the first game. The game was all about the pitching of
Grant Hodges and the hitting of the Wallace batters. Hodges tossed a complete game, didn't give up a single run, allowing only four hits, striking out five and not walking a single batter.
While Hodges was in control on the mound the Wallace batters racked up 13 hits, walked five times, and there was one hit batter.
The Govs scored a single run in the first on an RBI single from Cliatt. Wallace scored four runs in the third on consecutive RBI singles from
JT Thigpen, Shiver, Ryback, and Taylor.
The Govs put the game away in the bottom of the fourth when they sent 12 batters to plate and scored seven times. The Govs got RBIs from Shiver, Ryback, Taylor,
Anthony Zarzana, and Gleaton. Mahki Buckley scored the 12
th run on a wild pitch.
"It is junior college baseball," Enterprise coach Bubba Frichter said. "In that first game their guy threw well. We didn't play defense. That's kind of where our starter got in trouble because he had to throw a few more pitches. And our bullpen kind of let us down."
"In the second game, it was just a good baseball game. I looked up in the fifth inning and we had played for like 55 minutes and there were few hits. It was a pitcher's duel, Our starter threw well. Their starter threw well. Credit to him he pitched his butt off. He threw seven innings of baseball it was really tough to hit. One eggs got to crack sooner or later in a game like this. Luckily we were able to come out in the second game and outlast them."
After dropping two games to Enterprise on Thursday, Ihle was concerned about how his guys would come out and play Saturday.
"I was proud of these guys," he said. "I was interested to see how they would respond. We've 'been punched in the mouth before but not by someone we were fierce rivals with. I was interested to see how they would respond and they responded in a good way. We got a well-pitched game from
Grant Hodges and timely hitting."
And that first game also had a special meaning for Ihle. It was his 100
th win.
"I really didn't even know until CJ (Upshaw) came up to me after the game and said something. To be honest it was the furthest thing from my mind. The way our season started, I just going to be happy to make it to the state tournament. It is cool though. I hope there's many more to come. I'm not about the numbers next to my name. I'm more about trying to win championships because I'm not a selfish guy. I want team accolades to come."
After Saturday's games, Enterprise now has a three-game conference lead over Wallace. The Boll Weevils will next play next Thursday at Coastal Alabama North while Wallace will play at Marion on Thursday and home on Saturday.
