Congratulations to our Lady Govs!

The wait continues for our Govs baseball team

Although our Lady Govs' season ended much sooner than we hoped, there were still plenty of victories (beyond the scoreboard) that our program achieved this year. In particular, I am most proud of the following:
  • 12-game winning streak to earn a spot in the NJCAA District Tournament;
  • Olivia Elliott being named ACCC Player of the Year;
  • 3.1 team GPA during the spring semester (including four ladies earning a spot on the President's List and four more to the Dean's List);
  • Four Lady Govs signing scholarships to play softball at four-year institutions; and
  • Coach Dews earning his 700th career win as a head coach.
These ladies showed grit, resiliency, and heart in coming together as a unified team to do something few thought was possible at one point during the season – compete in the postseason.

To each of our Lady Govs – remember how hard you fought when facing adversity, and let those lessons carry you forward when you undoubtedly encounter challenges in the years to come. Each of you has a bright future ahead, and I am so very proud of you – individually and collectively.

On the other side of the Field House, we are still a week out from hearing whether our Govs baseball program will receive an at-large bid to the NJCAA Division II National Tournament. The team continues to practice in anticipation of good news coming our way next Monday, as we hope the selection committee recognizes that one atypical weekend from a team they unanimously ranked #1 just three weeks ago (and that was ranked in the top 3 for the duration of Conference play in the regular season) should not determine our team's ability to compete against the best teams in the country.

By the way - three teams currently in the top 10 realized just how difficult it was to navigate a tournament with a target on their back, ironically, just like us, seeing a #5 seed claim their Regional tournament title. Being a national pollster for another sport in the NJCAA, I have to think those results from this past weekend should reorient any thoughts of penalizing us for not making a district tournament (unless equitable treatment is given to those other programs) and prompt a reversion to some semblance of the rankings just before and/or after our trip to Oxford (when we were still ahead of these aforementioned teams). Next Monday cannot get here soon enough.

It's always a great day to be a Gov!
