The Wallace Govs got a much-needed win against Bishop State Friday night in an elimination game of the ACCC Baseball Tournament. At one point, the Govs trailed 4-1, but they bounced back to take a 9-7 victory.
"It's win or go home now," Wallace coach Ryan Ihle said. "I've got to tip my cap Caleb Muffoletto. He came in and pitched one heck of a game for us."
Dewey Brock struggled out of the gate, giving up four runs in the bottom of the first to the Wildcats before settling down.
By the third inning, the Govs had taken the lead. With one run in the first, two more in the second, the Govs took the lead for good in the third inning when they pounded out five runs.
The Govs scored on a wild pitch, a two-RBI single from Cason Eubanks, an RBI single from Sean Darnell, and an RBI double from Brody Capps. That put the Govs up 8-4.
Brock would give up two more runs, one in the bottom of the third and one in the bottom of the fourth. After that, Muffoletto took over and pitched the final five innings. He only gave up one run. That was a solo homer in the bottom of the ninth. The Govs added an additional run in the top of the eighth thanks to an RBI single from Ellis Yohn. That accounted for all of the scoring.
"This was my best game since ABAC," a happy Muffoletto said. "I could throw anything and I knew where it was going. It was the best feeling I've had since I pitched here last season against Shelton. I just wanted to get that feeling back."
The Govs now move on to play the winner of the LBW and Enterprise State game Saturday at 2 pm.
