Govs take first two from MMI

Lately, the Wallace Govs seem to have found a formula on how to win baseball games. That formula is rather simple. Leadoff batter Cason Eubanks gets on base. Grayson Ashe brings him home, and the Govs end up scoring a couple of runs in the first inning.

That formula worked again Thursday afternoon in their conference doubleheader against Marion Military Institute. The Govs came away with a sweep, easily winning game one 14-1 and battling to a 9-3 victory in game two.

That sweep means the Govs are all alone in first place in conference play. The Govs are now 6-0 in the conference, 17-4 overall

It didn't take long for game one to get out of hand. When Eubanks lead of with a double to centerfield, that was the beginning of the rout. The Govs parlayed Eubanks' double into a three-run first inning, thanks to an RBI single from Ashe, an RBI single from Warrick Wilmot, and a sacrifice fly from Ellis Yohn.

After the three-run first, Wallace scored five runs in the second and six in the fourth. The game ended early because of the 10-run rule.

Among the players who had a big game was first baseman Warrick Wilmot who was perfect at the plate. Wilmot went 3-for-3 with a three-run homer, a double and five RBIs.

"I'm getting my foot down now and I'm seeing the ball well," Wilmot said. "I'm continuing to work with the coaches on my swing. I never really lost my confidence, but I'm a lot more confident right now."

Catcher Grayson Ashe continued his hot hitting streak. Ashe, who leads the team in batting average, went 3-for -4 with three RBIs.

"I'm just trying to be the best player I can be and reach my full potential," Ashe said. "I'm keeping it simple, and simple is working right now. I've been talking to my dad and he sees things nobody else does. He's my biggest coach."

While the hitters did their part, Ellis Yohn took care of business on the mound. Yohn tossed a complete game three-hitter. The only run he gave up was in the final inning when the game was well in hand.

The Govs used the same formula in game two. Eubanks singled and Ashe doubled to bring him home. Wilmot hit a sacrifice fly that scored Ashe and the Govs had a 2-0 lead.

But unlike the first game, there was no big pull away. In fact, after Marion scored a run in the second, it was a one-run contest for much of the game. The Govs were finally able to put some distance between the two teams when they scored two runs in the fourth, three in the fifth, and finally two more in the sixth. Marion was only able to add single runs in the fifth and seventh.

"We fell into this false sense of security after winning the first game 14-1," Coach Ryan Ihle said. "It's good to get the sweep, but we still haven't put together a complete day. We will pitch well in one game, and we'll hit the ball in another game."

The Govs will conclude the four-game conference series on Monday. The game was moved from Saturday due to expected inclement weather. This is the beginning of an eight-game schedule for the Govs next week.
