Guest Column: Insight into the Govs baseball program

I am constantly being asked about the Wallace baseball program. From the coach to the players to everything surrounding the program, I get asked. So let me share a few things about this program.

One of the questions I was initially asked a lot is, who is this new coach. Well, his name is Ryan Ihle (pronounced i-lee). I don't get asked that much any more because a lot of you now know who Ryan is. In his first year following Mackey Sasser, Ryan is making a name for himself. He represents the program with class. He puts a quality product on the field. He has recruited young men who are not only quality players, but quality people. They are friendly. They know how to say thank you. And they know how to say "yes sir" or "no sir." I hate this last one because it makes me feel old! But credit to the parents for raising these young me the right way.

Wallace baseball is not only known throughout junior college ranks, it also brings attention to Dothan, Alabama. Case in point: the Govs played the number one team in the country this past weekend. A lot of people hadn't seen the Govs play this year, but Wallace Govs went toe-to-toe with LSU Eunice. You may have come to see the #1 team in the county, but please come back. You say a good baseball team on the other side as well.

Our players were not intimidated at all. In fact, some of them told me before the game they had hoped LSU Eunice would have come into the games undefeated. They wanted to hand them their first loss. Unfortunately the Bengals lost their first game of the season just before they took on Wallace.

I wanted to keep this more about the team, but there are two individuals on the Govs' team that really stood out in this series. The first is Kade Snell. The Bengals just couldn't get him out. Despite changing pitchers almost every time he came to the plate, Kade still hit three home runs, two doubles and had nine RBIs.

The other player that deserves a lot credit is catcher Grayson Ashe. All Grayson did was catch 23 innings of baseball in two days. That's more innings than a major league catcher has in two days. I was exhausted after just watching 14 innings on Friday. I didn't even want to get out of bed Saturday morning. Grayson not only got out of bed, he went out and caught nine more innings. I don't even know how he had the energy to stand. Oh to be 19 years old again!

Finally, let me close by saying this. One fan asked me Saturday if Wallace baseball is back. NO. It's not back. That's because it never went anywhere in the first place.
