DOTHAN, Ala. — The Wallace Community College Governors opened the Wallace Fall Classic at Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at Highland Oaks with a strong showing, as both Wallace teams currently sit inside the top five following the opening round of competition.
The Govs' top team currently sits in second place, trailing only Central Alabama Community College, while the second Wallace team is positioned in fifth place heading into the completion of the tournament.
Leading the way individually for Wallace are Cooper Weeks and Bryce Matthews, who each carded a 1-under-par round to finish the opening round tied for third overall in the individual standings. Their performances were especially impressive given the challenging conditions, as only nine golfers in the entire field managed to shoot under par during the first round.
The combination of the demanding Highland Oaks course and extremely wet conditions made scoring difficult throughout the opening round, making Weeks and Matthews' performances stand out among the field.
"I am happy with their play considering the terrible conditions," said Wallace Head Golf Coach Scott Stephens. "We still need to grow and learn how to finish in certain areas, but overall it was a good first day for all of our guys."
Weather delays pushed the tournament schedule behind, with the second round ultimately being suspended due to darkness. Play will resume today at 8:30 a.m., with the remainder of the second round being completed before the third and final round begins immediately afterward.
The Govs will look to build on their strong opening-round performance and make a push for the Wallace Fall Classic championship as tournament play continues today.
