ALABASTER--It was a heartbreaking loss for the Wallace Lady Govs. Their game against the Bevill State Bears went 14 innings and lasted over three hours in the ACCC Softball Tournament. After all that time, the Lady Govs eventually lost 6-1.
After seven innings of regulation play, the game was tied 1-1. Six innings later, the game was still tied. It wasn't until the 14Tth inning that Bevill managed to score.
With one out, Kaitlyn Chaple singled to right field. That was followed immediately by a two-run homer from Boomer Huguley. After seven innings of extra ball, the tie was finally broken. That big hit also gave the Bears some momentum.
Bevill followed up the home run with three consecutive base hits including an RBI double from Ana Guy plus an RBI ground out from Allison Bates. To add insult to injury, the Bears scored their final run on a steal of home by Alleigh Keeton.
"Both teams had opportunities to win that game," head coach David Dews said. "
Ella Houston was outstanding. She threw 14 innings which is like two games/ Their kid (Brianna Murray) also threw 14 innings. Both pitchers were really, gutsy. The defense was pretty solid  from both teams. But we both kept hitting  the ball right at each other."
Bevill scored the first run of the game in the top of the 4
th inning. Ragan McConnell reached on a single and later scored on a Wallace error.
Wallace quickly tied the game in the bottom of the inning,
Averi Laird and
Lana Carpenter led off with singles, Laird scored on a ground out by Lizzy Buchanan. Carpenter was later called out at the plate as she attempted to score.
"I'm really proud of how we played," Dews said. "We fought really hard. We just came up short."
