ALABASTER—They're here!
The Wallace Lady Govs have arrived in Alabaster one day ahead of their first-round game in the ACCC Softball Tournament. Wallace begins play Thursday at noon against Marion. Late Wednesday afternoon, the Lady Govs got in a little practice time at Veterans Park, the site of the ACCC Tournament.
"I'm excited to be here with this group," assistant coach Brianna Griffith said. "I think they deserve it. They're prepared, so now all we need to do is just go out and play well. This group is fun on and off the field, and that makes it a lot more enjoyable."
This is the second consecutive year the Lady Govs under Coach David Dews have made it to the state tournament. Dews said there is one big difference for him.
"I feel a little more confident than I was last year," he said. "We're a little more competitive than we were last year. The biggest thing right now is that our kids' mental state is good. They're looking forward to the opportunity, and they're excited to be here. You can't ask for any more than that."
The Lady Govs got a chance to practice on the astroturf at James Oates Park before their trip to Alabaster. That helped, but Griffiths said it's not exactly the same.
"I will say this turf is different from James Oates turf. James Oates only has their infield turfed, and the outfield is still grass. But I like this turf. It gives us pretty good hops. It skips a little bit faster, so it's a little bit of an adjustment."
Admission to the tournament is $15 per day or $20 for a complete tournament pass. Children six and under are admitted free.
