ALABASTER—The Wallace Lady Govs fell to the Marion Tigers in their opening game of the ACCC tournament here Thursday afternoon. The Govs made several key errors early on, and that was the difference in the ball game. The Tigers won 2-0.
Wallace falls to the losers' bracket and will now play Enterprise State. That game will be played at 10 a.m. on Friday.
Basically, there were two problems for the Govs. The first was errors. The Govs committed three errors in the first two innings. Those errors led directly to the only two runs Marion scored. All told, the Lady Govs committed four errors in the game.
The other problem was the Lady Govs inability to get hits. Wallace didn't have a hit through the first 4 2/3 innings and only managed three in the entire game. Both came late in the contest,
Erin Curry hit a single to centerfield with two out in the fourth,
Aimee Senn had a single in the sixth, and
Sadie Hanks got the last single in the seventh.
The Lady Tigers scored one run in the second and one in the third. In the second, Kinley Mahaffey singled to right field and then moved into scoring position when the ball got by the right fielder. Mahaffey then scored on a ground out.
In the second inning, Payton Pike reached on an error, and she later scored on a single to centerfield by Ragan McConnell. Those were the only runs allowed by
Wallace pitcher
Katlyn Conner and both runs were unearned.
"I think it was a tight ball game," Wallace coach David Dews said. "They just made a couple of key plays that we didn't. They capitalized on our mistakes. In these tournaments, you just keep on trying to push forward."
