MONTGOMERY—One more win. That's all the Wallace Govs need to claim the 2025 ACCC Baseball Championship. That's because the Govs took care of business late Friday night by defeating the Enterprise State Boll Weevils 13-5.
"It was a full team effort tonight," Wallace coach Ryan Ihle said. "We got a good start by
Mason Koczwara. He kind of hit a wall later on. That's the most innings he's pitched in his life. It was kind of one of those things where I needed him to get us off to a good start until we could get our offense going. Luckily, we started clicking early."
That is exactly what happened. Cason Gleaton opened the scoring for the Govs in the first inning with his RBI double.
Then in the second, the Govs put even more distance between themselves and the Weevils. The Govs sent eight hitters to the plate, got five hits, and scored four runs. They also chased the Weevil starter from the game.
The Govs got RBI singles from
Makhi Buckley and
Anthony Zarzana and an infield single from
JT Thigpen that resulted in an RBI and an additional run scoring on a throwing error. That gave the Govs a 5-0 lead.
Meanwhile, Koczwara was in complete command on the mound. He struck out the first four Weevils he faced. He ended the night with nine strikeouts in his 5 2/3 innings of work.
"I was making pitches in the right spot," said Koczwara, the newly crowned 2025 ACCC Pitcher of the Year. "Towards the end, I got a little tired. But it really came down to a couple of mistake pitches."
One of those mistakes was to DM Lieux. He finally put the Weevils on the scoreboard in the fifth inning with his solo home run over the left field fence.
It didn't take long for the Govs to answer—and then some. The Govs scored five runs in the bottom half of the inning. Wallace got RBIs from
Peyton Ryback,
Drew Shiver, and
Caleb Scott. The big blow of the inning was a two-run long ball by
Evan Taylor. His homer put the Govs up 10-1. After that inning, both Taylor and Ryback got injured and had to be replaced.
Koczwara ran out of gas in the sixth inning, and the Boll Weevils scored three runs. That's when
Clint Lafferty came in and closed the door. The Weevils only scored one more run the rest of the way, and that came on an error.
"I went out there with confidence in myself, and my teammates were behind me," Lafferty said. "I filled up the zone and did my thing. The atmosphere in this place tonight was electric."
"We had another huge performance by
Clint Lafferty coming in and killing the fire so to speak," Ihle said. "He's a guy that has pitched in big games all of his career."
Ihle said the team counted on everybody in this game, including some who weren't in the game at the start.
"Huge hats off to
Lawson Leger coming off the bench and getting a huge knock for us. He hasn't played a whole lot for us this year other than coming off the bench as a defensive replacement. And Jackson Clyatt came in for Ryback and got a big hit. It's what I told our group starting in the fall. We're only as good as our last guy. We proved tonight that guys can come in and pick right up for the guy they replaced."
Enterprise State can still make it into the championship game. They'll just have to do it the hard way now. The Boll Weevils would need to win Saturday and then beat Wallace twice on Sunday to win the championship.
"It just wasn't our night," Enterprise coach Bubba Frichter said. "We never did get the big hit. We didn't make some plays we should have early on, and it kind of got away from us."
The Govs will now play Sunday at 11 a.m. against whoever comes out of Saturday's losers' bracket. That game will be played in Riverwalk Stadium.
