Homecoming got off to a good start for the Wallace Lady Govs. Against the Gordon State Highlanders Wednesday afternoon, the Lady Govs scored early and often and cruised to a 13-8 victory in game one.
But in game two, Wallace let one slip away. Twice the Lady Govs led by three runs and even had a two run lead headed into the final inning. But Gordon State scored four runs in the seventh and came from behind to win 6-4.
"That's what we've been doing lately—playing a lot of .500 ball," said Wallace head coach David Dews. "We just can't seem to get over the hump. We just can't seem to find the right answers at the most important times. It's disheartening."
What had Dews so upset was the way his Lady Govs lost this second game. Wallace scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning on the strength of a two-RBI triple by Rebekah Powell and an RBI groundout from
Ella Houston.
After giving one run back in the top of the second, the Govs got the run back in the bottom half of the inning. That run came on an RBI ground out from Powell.
The Highlanders added another run in the fourth to make the score 4-2. Wallace held that lead until the final inning.
After getting the first out, the Highlanders put together five consecutive hits.  Hit number four from Lily Alpough scored the first run. Then came a bases loaded walk to Kaylee McDonald which tied the game. The sixth hit of the inning was a two-run single from Neveah Stevens which gave the Highlanders the victory.
In game one, the Lady Govs quickly fell behind 3-0 in the first inning. But Wallace quickly responded with four runs of their own in the bottom half and never trailed again.
"We've got (Chattahoochee Valley) tomorrow," Dews said. Â "We'll see how we come out there. Everything is still in front of us. It's just really disappointing right now."
Wallace will play CVCC on the road Thursday and at home Saturday in a crucial conference series.

This was the first ever homecoming games for the Lady Govs. Before the games free food was provided to everyone attending. The campus police department grilled the hot dogs for everyone, prizes were given away. new mascot Homer was present, and former players were recognized before the game. And because they weren't playing, even the baseball team and assistant coach CJ Upshaw got to take in part of the games. Even former coach Gene Dews, father of coach David Dews, made a rare appearance.
