Lady Govs winning streak now at 12 with sweep of Coastal Alabama North

The Wallace Lady Govs winning streak is now at 12 games. That, after the Lady Govs swept the Coastal Alabama North Coyotes in their conference double header Thursday afternoon.

The Lady Govs scored all of their runs in the second inning in game two. Turns out, that was all they needed as Wallace cruised to a 5-0 win.

Game one saw three lead changes before the Lady Govs eventually pulled away for a 16-8 run-rule victory in six innings.

"We're just trying to make sure we're doing it the right way down the stretch," Coach David Dews said. "In that first game, I didn't like our defensive efficiency. We played in a way where it could have been anybody's game. The second ball game was much better. We got real good pitching control, and the defense made all the plays they were supposed to. That's conducive to winning long term."

Also conducive to winning, keeping the other team from scoring. That's exactly what Katlyn Conner did. Conner tossed a complete game, striking out five in the process and only giving up six hits.

"I was just trying to throw my own game," Conner said. "I wasn't trying to do too much. I know what I needed to do and I did it. I was throwing in my zone. I wasn't worried about where the umpire's strike zone was or worrying about if they were going to hit it. It was just knowing that I could throw the pitch I wanted to throw."

Conner's teammates provided her with all of the offensive support she needed in the second inning. It started with back-to-back singles from Sadie Hanks and Ella Barefield. Then, with one out, Lana Carpenter knocked in the first run with a single to left field. That was followed immediately by an RBI single from Caroline Armstrong. After the second out, Rebekah Rowell singled to right field to plate two runs. Elly Castle knocked in the final run with her RBI single to right field.

The Lady Govs didn't score again in the game. But just as important, thanks to Conner, neither did the Coyotes.

In game one, pitching couldn't get the job done, so the offense had to take over. Four Wallace pitchers couldn't contain the Coyotes, so it was up to the Lady Gov hitters. The Lady Govs scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth to win in a run-rule shortened game.

The game featured three lead changes. In the middle of the fifth inning, Coastal held a 7-5 lead. That's when the Wallace bats really came to life.

The Lady Govs scored four runs in the bottom of the inning to take the lead for good. The runs came on a two-RBI single from Rebekah Rowell and a two-RBI double from Ella Houston. That put Wallace up 10-7.

The Coyotes got one of the runs back in the top of the seventh before Wallace put the game away. But it wasn't the Wallace hitting that got the job done. It was the Coyote pitching staff's inability to throw strikes. And errors. Two of the six runs Wallace scored were on bases-loaded walks. A third scored on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch. A fourth run scored on an error, and a fifth on a sacrifice fly. Only a single by Libby Buchanan plated a run with a hit,

The Lady Govs are now 23-9 in conference play with only a series left against Bishop next weekend. Wallace remains in third place, one game behind Bishop.
