Gulf Coast pummels Wallace
Â
Just a few days after they swept a conference double header from Bishop State, the Wallace Govs baseball team fell off the wagon once again Tuesday afternoon. Against the Gulf Coast Commodores, the Govs pitching let them down. The hitting was lacking. And it didn't help that a 30 mph wind was blowing out.
The combination of all three led to a 16-3 win for the Commodores in nonconference play. The scheduled nine inning game only went seven innings because of the run-rule.
When addressing the team afterwards, assistant coach
Jack Schaffer said, "We didn't play with the same swagger we played with over the weekend. We've got to get more consistent in everything we do."
Head coach Ryan Ihle went even further, adding "We've got to find a way to put the ball in play," after watching 11 Govs strike out. "We've got to find a way to sweep these upcoming conference series or at least win three-out-of-four. We just can't continue to have these bad innings."
The Commodores jumped out to 5-0 lead thanks entirely to the home run ball. Starting pitcher
Anthony Robinson gave up a solo homerun to Jacon Payne in the second inning and two-run homers to Alex McCranie and Payne in the third.
The Govs finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth. With the bases loaded,
Anthony Zarzana hit a two-run single, cutting the lead to 5-2.
After that, the game became a blowout. The Commodores only scored one run in the fifth but exploded for eight runs in the sixth. Those runs came mainly because Gov pitcers hit three batters and walked four others. All four batters were walked by pitcher
Will Rice—two with the bases loaded. There were only four hits in the inning as Gulf Coast sent 14 batters to the plate.
The Govs were able to add a final run in the bottom of the sixth, but Gulf Coast added two more in the top of the seventh.
All total, the Govs walked nine batters in the game and hit six others. The offense wasn't much better as 11 Govs struck out while there were only seven hits.
The Govs return to conference play Thursday when they host Reid State in a doubleheader at noon.
