The Enterprise State Boll Weevils beat the Wallace Govs in two different ways Thursday afternoon. First it was a come-from-behind walk-off hit in the bottom of the seventh inning that gave the Weevils a 7-6 win. That was game one.
Game two didn't involve any drama. The Weevils scored early and often in route to a 15-4 win five innings.
The two-game seep at their place means the Weevils are alone in first place in the conference with a record of 17-3. Wallace falls to 12-6.
"We got both ends of it today," Enterprise coach Bubba Frichter said. "We came on top in the two different ways you can do. One was walking them off late in the first game, and then in the second game a run rule. Nothing was easy in the first game. We walked in two runs and we found out later our starter had a cut on his finger. Then a local guy, Hunter Williams of Dothan came in and threw 6 2/3 innings for us. Like I told our guys in the fourth inning, I had a lot of faith in them. I never felt like we were totally out of it."
"We didn't put them away early," Wallace coach Ryan Ihle said of Enterprise. "That's what happens when you play scrappy teams. We let them hang around and gave them a chance to win. We left a lot of runners on and made a bunch of base running mistakes. I left (
Jake Middleton in a little to long. I should have trusted my gut and put somebody else in. But when he's your number one, he's your number one for a reason. I'll live with tat decision. It's one I'll probably make many more times."
The comments from both coaches were mainly about game one. That's because it was a lot more competitive. Here's what happened,
The Govs had a three-run lead going into the bottom of the seventh. But when Bradford Bush began the inning by reaching on an error from shot stop
Evan Taylor. After that, things unraveled quickly. The Govs failed to get a angle out.
Matt Godwin doubled to left field to plate the first run. Matt Snell was hit by a pitch. DM Lieux singled to centerfield to plate Godwin and that was the end of the day for Middleton,
In came
Clint Lafferty. He promptly gave up RBI singles to Drew Cashin and Braden Warren and that was the end of the game. After trailing 6-0, the Weevils had come back to win the game.
Leading up to that final inning, things had been going well for Wallace. Â In the first inning of this game, without the benefit of a hit, the Govs scored two runs in top of the first on bases-loaded walks. That knocked starter Tyson Coller from the game. The Govs then added single runs in the second and third and two more in the fifth to take their 6-0 lead. Wallace starter
Jake Middleton had only given up one hit to that point.
But in the bottom of the fifth the Boll Weevils struck for three runs. Gaines Harrell hit an RBI double, Snell hit an RBI single, and Lieux had an RBI double to close the gap to 6-3. All of that came before the dramatic final inning.
Game two started well for the Govs. Wallace quickly took a 3-0 lead on the strength of a two-run homer from
Blake Wynn and a solo homer from Kason Gleason.
But in the bottom of the first that lead quickly evaporated when Enterprise sent 10 batters to the plate and scored six times. The big blow was a two-run homer from Jake Boroff.
Enterprise went on to add four runs in second and five in the third.
The Govs and Boll Weevils will complete their four game conference series Saturday at noon in Dothan.
