Lady Govs begin season with a win

The day after the Wallace Lady Govs played their first game, the coaches and the players were all smiles. That's because straight out of the gate the Lady Govs jumped on top of Thomas College and earned a 9-0 victory in Thomasville Thursday afternoon. The Lady Govs dropped the second game 3-2, but that didn't matter. The tone for the 2025 season had been set.

"We don't need to do any soul searching," said freshman Sadie Hanks. "We were all excited. We played together and we played with a lot of energy."

"Our girls were just excited to get started," said assistant coach Brianna Griffiths. "Our bats were hot, we played good defense, and we played with a lot of energy. Katlyn Conner threw a three-hit shutout. Everything we could have asked for went well in the first game."

It didn't stop with Connor. Libby Buchanan and Rebekah Rowell each had two hits in the first game. Elly Castle had two RBIs, and Erin Curry also had a good day including an inside-the-park home run. Also on the day, Lana Carpenter had seven put-outs in right field along with her two hits and three stolen bases.

"Up and down the lineup we had lot of hits in the first game," Griffiths said. "We didn't have too many strikeouts. I'd like to see more walks, just to show discipline at the plate. We need to be hitting what we want to hit, not hitting what the pitchers throw to us. We need to be hitting in our zone."

Griffiths said the Lady Govs also had quite a few stolen bases. She said that it was exciting to see because last year they didn't do that much. But this year's team can run well.

Although the Lady Govs lost game two, Griffiths said the loss doesn't tell the entire story.

"Ella Houston threw well. The game doesn't show it because we didn't come up with a win. She threw six complete innings only giving up five hits. We made some errors in that game that led to those earned runs. I think we got a little complacent in that second game. We had just beat that team 9-0. They threw a better pitcher, but we didn't make adjustments."

After watching her team play its first two games, Griffiths is looking forward to the rest of the season.

"I'm excited about what I saw. They just play well together. There's not too much selfishness. They're not worried about playing time. They understand what each other can do well. They complement each other. We can put different people in different positions in different situations.  So now it's back to work before Tuesday. We want to get two wins at home."
