The Wallace Govs now have a four-game conference lead over second place Central Alabama. That's because the Govs swept the Trojans Thursday afternoon, winning the first game 6-1 and edging out a 2-1 victory in game two.
Wallace is now 20-2 in conference play and 32-6 overall. Central falls to 16-6 in Conference play. LBW began the week a distant third at 14-10.
"We took care of business at our place, and that's what we set out to do," Coach Ryan Ihle said. "That second game wasn't clean or pretty, but we found a way to win. Sometimes it takes doing the little things to win a ball game, like hustling on what should be a routine fly ball out, or a routine ground ball and those things turn into a run. That's what separates us from a lot of teams because we continue to do the little things."
In the fifth inning of the second game,
Grayson Ashe hit what appeared to be a routine fly ball. But the right fielder misplayed it and Ashe turned it into a hustle double.
The Govs scored their second run the very next inning.
Cason Eubanks led off the sixth with single to left field. After two hit batters, the bases were loaded. Eubanks was then able to score on a wild pitch.
The Trojans scored their only run of the game in the sixth inning after a little bit of controversy. Kelvin Ayala led off the inning with a single. Shortly afterwards, Wallace pitcher
Jake Middleton was called for a balk, sending Ayala to second. After a long conversation and disagreement, a visibly rattled Middleton finally got to throw another pitch. He gave up an RBI single to Japhet Rosado. After that, Middleton settled down and got the next three batters of the inning. He also sat down the final three batters of the seventh inning to pitch a complete game."
"It was just a great atmosphere today," the lefthander said of the team that was right behind the Govs in the standings. "I think everybody in the stands could see they had trouble with my curve ball. And I could rely on my fastball when I needed it."
Ihle said before the game he wanted his Govs to jump on top early. That's exactly what his Govs did in game one.
As usual,
Cason Eubanks set the table for the Govs, but this time it was with a lead-off walk.
Sean Darnell followed with a single to centerfield, and
Grayson Ashe walked to load the bases. The first two runs scored without the benefit of a hit. With the bases loaded.
Warrick Wilmot was hit by a pitch to force in a run. Then
Brody Capps hit into a double play, but a run scored and the Govs were off to a 2-0 lead.
The Trojans got one of the runs back in the second inning, but then Wallace put the game away in the third inning. That's when the Govs sent 12 batters to the plate and scored four runs. The big blow was a three-run homer of the bat of Wilmot, his 4th of the year. The fourth run scored on yet another bases loaded walk, this time to
JT Thigpen.
"Timing was everything," Wilmot said. "With two strikes, I had to get my foot down. He threw me a change-up that caught too much of the plate and I didn't miss it."
With his team scoring six runs for him,
Colton Dorsey was just rolling along on the mound. Dorsey tossed a complete game, giving up one run, allowing only four hits, striking out seven and didn't walk a single batter.
"I was just glad to get back out there," "Dorsey said. "The last time I started was against Andrew and things didn't go so well."
The Govs and the Trojans will complete their conference series Saturday in Alexander City. No matter the outcome of those games, the Govs will still be in first place after the weekend.
