Govs drop opening game of the ACCC Tournament

OXFORD—The Wallace Govs played the Coastal Alabama-North Coyotes, but they could never get on top. The best they could was one tie.

Coastal jumped on top in the first inning, but Wallace quickly answered in the bottom half. But the Coyotes scored another run in the top of the second, and from that point on never trailed. Coastal went on to edge the Govs 5-3.

The loss dropped the Govs to the loser's bracket. They will play again at 4 p.m. today against Bishop. The loss also means the Govs must win five consecutive games in order to win the tournament.

"We gave ourselves a chance at the end," Wallace coach Ryan Ihle said. "The problem is we didn't do much in the beginning."

"I know we have a target on our back, but we have to embrace that. I don't think we did that. I think we played scared early on."

The Coyotes never had more than a two-run lead in this game. They also only scored single runs in five different innings.

Ethan McAnnally had the RBI single in the first. Kye Blevins had the RBI single in the second. A bases loaded walk accounted for the run in the fifth. A sacrifice fly from McAnnally plated a run in the sixth. And a single to right field by Sebastian Harden in the ninth was the last run from the Coyotes.

Wallace only had six hits in the contest compared to 14 for Coastal.

Grayson Ashe plated the first run in the first inning with a sacrifice fly. The Govs other two runs came in the fifth inning, one from an RBI single from Brody Capps while the second scored on an error.

The game ended with the Govs having the tying run at first base, but Ashe lined out to left for the final out.

Before the game, the Govs won three prestigious awards. Coach Ryan Ihle was named ACCC Coach of the Year, Headland's Reigh Jordan received the ACCC Pitcher of the Year Award, while Dothan's Cason Eubanks was named ACCC Player of the Year.
