Govs earn series sweep against Enterprise State

Govs wrap up regular season by taking two more from ESCC

ENTERPRISE—The scores were close, but just like Thursday's games, the Wallace Goves came away with a pair of victories against the Enterprise State Boll Weevils. In both games, the Govs gave up runs in the seventh inning to make the game close.

Wallace gave up two runs in the bottom of the seventh in game one. Fortunately, they entered the inning leading by six and were able to win 8-4.

But game two was a dogfight until the very last out. The Govs led by four and only needed to get three outs to win. But just like Thursday, the Govs committed two crucial errors. That allowed the Weevils to score three times. The game ended with the tying run in scoring position when Cole Savage was called out on strikes. The Govs held on to win 12-11.

Regardless of the score, the Govs swept all four games from Enterprise State. Wallace ends the regular season ranked #1 in the country with a record of 42-6. The Govs finish at 30-2 in conference play, not dropping a single series. The next time the Govs play will be Friday morning at 10:00 in the ACCC Conference tournament. The Govs enter the tourney as the number one seed.

"I think we showed a lot of heart and a lot of grit in this series," Coach Ryan Ihle said. "It's always a big series against Enterprise regardless of where each team stands, or how many wins and losses each team has; it's always going to be a big one. We didn't pay clean at all. We didn't swing it the way we should. We didn't pitch it the way we should. But we found a way to win, and these past few games show that every single person in this dugout has something to contribute at some point."

A few notes from Saturday's high scoring affair, Walker Altman saved both games.

"This was a good team effort," Altman said. "The team needed somebody to come in both situations and it didn't matter if it were me or somebody else. But I am glad I had the ball in my hands and I got the job done. Now we can roll into the Conference tournament on a winning streak."

Brody Capps swung the bat well during the entire Enterprise series. In Saturday's first game he went 2-for-5 with a double, a single and an RBI. In game two, he was 3-for-3 with two walks and two RBIs.

Warrick Wilmot went 4-for-4 in game one with three RBIs and a hit by pitch.

Jake Smith was 2-for-3 with a walk in game one. He was 2-for-4 in game two.

Ellis Yohn was perfect at the plate in game two. He was 2-for-2 and had two walks.

"I couldn't be more proud of this team, especially going through some adversity," Ihle said. "At the end of the day, we're always going to play for the win and we got that today."
