Wallace Lady Govs continue on a roll with eighth straight win

The Wallace College Lady Govs won for the eighth straight time and inched closer to securing a berth in the fast-approaching district playoffs.

On Saturday, Wallace completed a four-game sweep of Enterprise State by taking a doubleheader with scores of 4-3 and 13-2 on its home field after winning a pair at Enterprise on Thursday.

"The bats came alive and our pitching was phenomenal today," said assistant coach Brianna Griffiths, who was in charge Saturday due to head coach David Dews being sick. "We've been waiting for our defense to play behind them, and they did.

"We made the plays we're supposed to, but we also made some great plays. And our bats are on fire right now."

Several weeks ago, making the five-team district playoffs appeared bleak for Wallace after losing four straight in a series to Central Alabama.

At the time, Dews, the first-year coach of the Lady Govs, said the team needed to win its remaining games to have a chance at the playoffs.

The Lady Govs haven't lost since and have four more games left in the regular season – two at L.B. Wallace in Andalusia on Thursday before hosting the Saints next Saturday.

"Winning 12 straight was our goal to make it into the playoffs," Griffiths said. "We've done eight so far so we're looking to sweep LBW. We've put ourselves in good position … we've just been playing well at the right time."

In the opener Saturday, Wallace got a home run from Elly Castle and led 4-0 after five innings.

Enterprise cut the lead in half when Shak Washington hit a two-run homer in the top of the sixth and pulled within one before the inning was complete after Kierstin Sunday hit a soft liner over second base to drive in another run.

In the seventh, Jenna Toups came in to pitch for Wallace in relief of starter Katlyn Conner to begin the inning and was able to keep the Boll Weevils off the board to close out the victory.

In Game 2, Wallace plated four runs in the bottom of the first and never looked back.

Joanna Marshall doubled over third to lead off the inning and then Reagan Tomlin dropped down a bunt and beat to throw to first. Castle then bunted and Marshall rushed home to score, sliding in safely under a high throw from the pitcher.

After a walk loaded the bases, Erin Curry doubled off the center field fence to drive in two runs in making it 3-0. An RBI single by Jaci Hagler plated the fourth run of the inning.

In the second, Castle drove in a run with a soft liner to right field and Curry had a sacrifice fly RBI to make it 6-0.

Enterprise scored in the third to make it 6-1 when Khloe Jones singled up the middle to bring in Kara Cox, who had doubled over third to lead off the inning.

But the Lady Govs answered with five in the third – the first two coming in when Tomlin singled to right field – and the last three coming on a three-run homer by Olivia Elliott, who was also the starting pitcher.

Wallace made it 13-1 in the fourth when Tomlin drove in two runs with a single into right field.

The Boll Weevils scored one in the fifth on a single by Allie Busbee before Elliott got the final out to end the game and earn the win in the circle.

"At the beginning of the season we were at 6-7 errors per game and we've turned it around, so it's been fun to watch," Griffiths said. "These kids are competing hard; they're fighting and they want it."
