Even though the Wallace Govs had already clinched the conference title one day earlier, they still played like they had something to prove Saturday afternoon. Against the Wallace-Selma Patriots, the Govs had a pair of shutouts—winning the first game 4-0 and trouncing Selma 14-0 in game two.
"We're doing what we set out to do," said sophomore
Brody Capps who had two doubles and two RBIs on the day. "We wanted to get back to the [ACCC] tournament and win one more game this time. We came up just a little short last year."
"This is just a sense of pride," said third baseman
Sean Darnell, another sophomore. "We try to win every single game no matter who the opponent is."
Game two was over quickly. When Darnell singled and Capps doubled in the first inning, the route was on. The Govs sent 12 batters to the plate, scored six runs, and chased the starting pitcher from the game.
The second inning was even worse for the Patriots. This time the Govs sent 11 batters to the plate and scored seven runs. They also faced two more Patriot pitchers before the onslaught was over. In the middle of this barrage, Darnell and Capps each hit two-RBI doubles. The Govs had scored 13 runs in two innings—all without the benefit of a homerun.
The 14
th run came in the bottom of the fourth.
Warrick Wilmot doubled to bring in
Cason Eubanks, who had walked.
"We took care of business today," head coach Ryan Ihle said. "Just because we've clinched doesn't mean we need to let up. Now we've got to go back to work because we've got another key series to play next week."
Game one wasn't a big blowout, but it was still a win. It got started with a three-run first inning.
Warrick Wilmot got things going with a single to left field. After a ground out from
Grayson Ashe,
Logan Johnson and
Ellis Yohn both walked to load the bases. The first run scored on an
RBI single from
JT Thigpen. With the bases still loaded,
Jake Smith walked to force in a run. Finally,
Cason Eubanks hit a deep sacrifice fly to centerfield to force in the third run.
The only other run for the Govs came the very next inning. Capps led off with an infield single. He later scored on a single from Johnson.
That was all the offense
Reigh Jordan needed. Once again he was wheeling and dealing. Jordan pitched six scoreless innings, striking out four and walking only one batter. He was replaced in the seventh inning by
Walker Altman who struck out two.
Wallace is now 38-6 on the season and 26-2 in conference play. The Govs became the 2024 conference champions on Friday when they swept the Patriots in Selma.
Next weekend, the Govs will play Enterprise State in the final ACCC series of the season. Wallace will host ESCC on Thursday at noon and will travel to Enterprise on Saturday.
