Grayson Ashe had an outstanding day at the plate. In the Wallace Govs doubleheader against the Andrew College Tigers on Monday afternoon, Ashe hit a home run in both games. Ashe went 2-for-3 with a home run, a walk, and two RBI in game one. Then in game two, Ashe was 2-for-3 with a three-run home run, a walk, and three RBIs.
Ashe's performance was one reason the Govs swept the Tigers, winning game one 7-4 and trouncing the Tigers 14-7 in game two.
"I was able to put some good swings on the ball today," Ashe said. I have been seeing the ball well lately and that has translated into success."
Ashe wasn't the only Gov who had success at the plate—particularly in game two. In addition to Ashe, Jake Smith went 2-for-2 including a homerun, a triple, and two RBIs.
"I'm starting to get better at the plate," Smith said. "It's all about my pivot point. I've been working hard on getting my pivot point right and it's starting to pay off."
Brody Capps, who also hit a homerun in game two, also talked about the team's work on pivot points during the swing.
"It's making a big difference," Capps said. "I'm seeing the ball better, I'm reacting quicker, and I'm not thinking as much."
Capps had his best game in quite some time, going 3-for-4 with a homer, a double, and three RBIs.
The big difference in this game was the second inning. After sending 14 batters to the plate, the Govs exploded for 10 runs in the inning. Smith hit both his homer and his triple in this inning, Ashe hit his homer, and there were three additional hits.
A three-run deficit was no problem for Wallace in game one. The Govs found themselves trailing 3-0 before they even came to bat in the first inning.
But by the end of the second inning, that deficit was completely gone and the Govs had a 4-3 lead. After that, the Govs never trailed again en route to victory.
The Tigers took the lead in the top of the first inning thanks to an RBI single from Josh McDonald and a two-run homer from Bryson Brookshire. All of the runs came off Wallace starter Caleb Muffoletto.
But in the bottom of the second, Cason Eubanks took Muffoletto of the hook with one swing of the bat. With the bases loaded Eubanks cleared them with his double to the gap in left-centerfield. Grayson Ashe followed immediately with an an RBI single to centerfield, putting the Govs up 4-3.
After the Govs scored another run in the third inning, Ashe further extended the Govs lead the very next inning. That's when he smacked a no-doubter home run over the left field fence.
The Tigers scored another run in the top of the sixth, but Wallace matched that run in the bottom of the inning when Jake Smith reached on error. Smith went three-for-four in the game, while Ashe was two-for-three with three RBIs and a walk.
The Govs are now 15-4 on the season and will return to conference play Thursday when they host Marion Military Institute. First pitch is set for noon on the Wallace campus.
