Wallace baseball sweeps Bevill State

The Wallace Govs continued their outstanding conference play Sunday afternoon. This time it was with a sweep of the Bevill State Bears. After dominating the Bears with a five inning 13-3 win in game one, the Govs came from behind to win game two 5-2.

The Govs are now 15-1 in conference play and 27-5 overall. The Govs are ranked #3  in the country in the NJCAA poll and have a two-game lead over Central Alabama in the conference.

"We haven't been playing great baseball, but we've been finding a way to get the job done," Wallace coach Ryan Ihle said. "We're getting better. But what I'm most proud of is, we've had different guys who have stepped up. Today it was Jake Smith who came up with the big hit."

The Govs quickly fell behind 2-0 in the second game. But in the bottom of the first Wallace cut that lead in half. Cason Eubanks smacked his team-leading sixth homerun.. Eubanks tied the game in the fourth with an RBI single.

It was in the bottom of the fifth that Smith came up with his big hit. With the score tied 2-2 and two runners on base, Smith came through with a two-RBI double to centerfield. Grayson Ashe later followed with a long sacrifice fly that accounted for the final run.

Those three runs made a winner out of reliever Colton Dorsey who came in to pitch in fifth inning.

All it took was a couple of big innings for Govs to win the first game. The Govs scored five in second inning, mixed in a single run in the third, then ended the game with the 10-run rule in the bottom of the fifth when they scored eight runs.

The Govs sent 10 batters to the plate in the second. It began when Logan Johnson walked and later scored the game's first run on a wild pitch. Later, Cason Eubanks reached on an RBI infield single and scored himself on another wild pitch. The Govs also got an RBI single from Sean Darnell. The fifth run scored on a sacrifice fly from Grayson Ashe.

The Bears scored their only three runs in the top of the fifth. But it didn't take the Govs long to respond in the bottom half of the inning.

This time the Govs sent 11 batters to the plate. Wallace benefited from two walks, two errors, and seven hits. The game ending hit came on a two-RBI double from Brody Capps.

The Govs step out of conference play Tuesday when they host Gulf Coast. They return to conference play Thursday when they travel to Brewton to take on Coastal Alabama-North.
