It's hard to win a ball game when your team strikes out 10 times, but that's exactly what happened to the Abraham Baldwin Stallions Tuesday afternoon.
Wallace pitcher Caleb Muffoletto struck out 10 Stallions in seven innings in an absolutely dominant performance. He allowed only one run, and walked two in a 9-2 Wallace win.
"I knew they weren't going to beat me," Muffoletto said. "So I just blew my fastball right past them. I got a lot of swing and misses from that and had command of my breaking ball when I needed it."
For Muffoletto, it was a career high in strikeouts. His previous high was five. That came last year against Shelton State.
The Govs got started early when Cason Eubanks did his usual thing, leading off the game with a double. After a walk to Sean Darnell and later, a single from Jake Smith, Ellis Yohn knocked in the first two runs of the game with a single to centerfield.
The Stallions got one of the runs back in the top of the fourth. But the Govs added two more runs in the fifth and sixth innings thanks mainly to hustle that forced errors by the Stallions.
In the 5th inning, Darnell walked, and with two outs, Smith hit a fly ball to right field that was misjudged. But with Darnell hustling, he was able to score all the way from first base.
In the sixth, Logan Johnson led off with a single. An attempt to pick him off first base led to Johnson making it all the way to third. But an attempt to catch him sliding into third base led to another error so Johnson was able to score.
In the eighth inning, it wasn't errors. It was the Govs swinging the bats that did the damage. After three consecutive walks, Darnell doubled in two runs. That was followed by a two-RBI single from Grayson Ashe. The fifth run scored on a long sacrifice fly from Warrick Wilmot.
"There's not much I have to say after a win like that," Wallace coach Ryan Ihle said. "Muffoletto did his thing and just shut them down. Caleb Maxwell (who allowed the second run of the game) came in and finished things off for us. We're a much better team when we have a lot of baserunners and put up some crooked numbers in innings."
The Govs return to conference play Thursday when they travel to Mobile to face Bishop.
