It took a six-run sixth inning for the Wallace Govs to win the second game of their doubleheader against the LBW Saints Thursday afternoon. Trailing 4-2 when the inning began, the Govs were able to get to starter Gabe Bryant and closer Ben Moseley by sending 10 batters to the plate and pounding out six hits. That led to a Wallace 8-4 victory.
In game one,
Ellis Yohn pitched and hit his way to a Wallace victory. On the mound, he pitched five innings. At the plate, he cracked a three-run homer in the bottom of the first inning which ultimately led to a 10-4 win.
The sweep of the Saints mean the Govs open conference play at 2-0. The Govs and Saints will conclude their four-game series this Saturday in Andalusia.
"What a way to comeback," Coach Ryan Ihle said to his team afterwards. "Adversity builds a team and we did a heck of a job in completing the task."
LBW coach Steve Helms said as much as he complimented the Govs.
"We had the lead twice today and each time they (Wallace) came back," Helms said. "That's the mark of a good team."
The Govs began game two with a lead-off home run from
Cason Eubanks, who was 3-for-4 in the game with three RBIs. Eubanks was also 3-for-3 with a walk in game one.
"I got back to myself," Eubanks said of his six-hit day. "Earlier in the week I struggled against Chipola. So when I got to practice yesterday, I got back to being myself. I let the game come to me instead of me coming to the game."
After Eubanks' homer, the Saints tied the game in the third inning on a single from TJ Rines. The Govs retook the lead in the bottom half on an RBI single from
Sean Darnell.
However in the top of the sixth, LBW scored three runs on an RBI single from Joshua Shelly and a two-run homer from Shelton Arroyo.
The Govs responded big time in the bottom of the sixth. The Govs got an RBI single from
Grayson Ashe, an RBI single from
Slade Seaborn who later scored on a wild pitch, a two-RBI double from Eubanks, and a two-run homer from
Jake Smith.
In the first game, Yohn gave up a two-run blast in the top of the first to Joshua Shelly, The Govs quickly answered in the bottom half of the inning.
Cason Eubanks got things rolling with a single to centerfield and
Jake Smith walked. Then with one out,
Warrick Wilmot reached on a freak play. Wilmot hit a fly ball to centerfield, but Owen Walters misjudged it, putting Wilmot on base while also plating a run.Â
Yohn, as they say, then helped his own cause. He smacked a three- run homer over the centerfield fence. That put the Govs up 4-2 and Wallace never trailed again.
The Govs added a single run in the fourth inning, then tacked on five more in the fifth. Pitcher/designated hitter
Ellis Yohn got the victory.
When asked if hitting in a game he's pitching means a little more, Yohn said "A little bit. When I'm pitching, I control how many runs the other team gets. So I try to pitch and let my team play defense. Nobody wants to play defense behind a guy who is walking a bunch of people."
The Govs and Saints matchup this Saturday at noon on the LBW campus.
