Perhaps Wallace coach Ryan Ihle said It best: "It's all about how you start, but it's more important how you finish."
That's certainly true when the Govs took on the Chipola Indians Tuesday night. The Govs quickly fell behind 3-0 in the first two innings. The biggest problem was the Indians scored all three runs without the benefit of a single hit.
But in the end the Govs got the finish they needed. Wallace rallied to score four runs in the ninth inning and came away with a 7-4 victory.
"This was a heck of a win, especially since we had to overcome a lot of adversity," Ihle said. "But I think we learned a lot tonight."
Here's how things went down. Both teams used a ton of pitchers. It was a typical midweek game where coaches wanted to get in a little work for their pitchers ahead of big games later in the week. Chipola used a total of 10 pitchers while Wallace used five. The problem was the Chipola pitching staff was much more effective than Wallace.
Wallace starter Jake Johnson walked three, hit four batters, and threw three wild pitches in the first two innings. That's how the Indians jumped out to a 3-0 lead, all without a hit. Chipola didn't get its first hit until the fifth inning. The Indians only had three hits in the entire game.
In the fifth inning, the Govs began to claw their way back into the game. Wallace scored single runs in the fifth, seventh, and eight innings to tie the game. That came with the help of a long solo homerun from Jake Smith.
However, in the bottom of eighth, Chipola responded. After yet another walk and yet another hit batter, Zald Diaz singled to once again give the Indians a lead, 4-3.
But in their last at-bat, Wallace got up off the mat. It began with a one-out double from Smith. He later scored on a wild pitch. Three walks loaded the bases. A bases loaded walk to Blake Wynn plated the second and go-ahead run. Grayson Ashe gave the Govs some much needed insurance with his two-RBI single.
The Govs will open conference play this Thursday when they host LBW at noon.
