After scoring single runs in each of the first four innings, the Wallace Govs held a slim 4-2 lead over the Tallahassee Community College Eagles in the eighth inning. But with one swing of the bat, Grayson Ashe gave the Govs a much-needed cushion.
With the bases loaded, Ashe lined a double to left field, clearing the bases and plating three runs. Four batters later, Sean Darnell provided the Govs with their final margin of victory. Darnell singled to right field bringing in two more and the Govs came away with a 9-2 win.
"I wasn't trying to do too much. I was just trying to get a run in," Ashe said of hitting his second double of the game. "I just wanted to control what I could control. All I was thinking was, find a way to get a run in and it turned out to be three. I was pretty happy with that."
In addition to Ashe, another player who had a good day at the plate was first baseman Warrick Wilmot. He was perfect at the plate going three-for-three with a double and also a walk.
"I knew I had to make a big adjustment," Wilmot said. "Rumors were being spread around that I needed glasses. I had to play better, I shortened everything up, got my foot down a little early, sat fastball, and reacted to everything else. Preparation with Coach Ryan (Ihle) throughout the week made the difference. He told me I need to keep my head steady, get my foot down, sit fastball and just be me again. It felt great."
"Welcome back Warrick," Ihle joked after the game. "We had a good team win today. We still left too many guys on base in scoring position. But our pitching staff did a very good job of throwing strikes and keeping them from scoring."
Starting pitcher Jake Middleton and relievers Reigh Jordan and Dewey Brock held the Eagles scoreless for seven of the nine innings. The only inning the Eagles were able to score was the seventh, and that was only because the Govs committed two errors.
The Govs jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first four innings. The run in the first scored on a groundout from Sean Darnell. The second inning run scored on an infield single by Blake Wynn. Logan Johnson's single in the third plated run number three. Wynn knocked in the fourth run in the fourth inning with an RBI groundout.
Wallace is now 6-3 on the season and will begin conference play on Thursday. The Govs will host LBW at noon in the earliest ever start of the conference season.
