Lady Govs swept by Marion

Elly Castle tags
A fourth inning homerun made the difference for Marion Military in their second game of their doubleheader against the Wallace Lady Govs Thursday afternoon.. With the game tied 1-1, Ally Putman connected for a three-run homer. Those three runs turned out to be the difference as the LadyTigers won 5-3.

In game one, Wallace  couldn't keep up with the Marion scoring. The Lady Tigers hit two homers in this game and went on to win 10-5.

The pair of wins meant the Lady Govs were swept on their home field in this crucial conference matchup. Coach David Dews knows exactly why his team lost and he's not happy about it.

"We practiced like crap for two days," Dews said. "They're on Spring Break and their minds are on other things. We didn't prepare very well.  I knew coming in we didn't prepare very well and now we're in trouble, We got swept at home which hardly ever happens. Now we've got to go to their place tomorrow and that's a tough place to play on the road. We'll see how we respond. Maybe we'll play a little bit cleaner and play a little more focused."

In the first game, every time Marion would score Wallace would answer. That happened three different times. The problem was, each time Wallace answered, Marion would respond with runs of their own—and usually more runs.

Ultimately, the difference in the game was the first two innings. Marion scored two runs in the first inning and three more in the second to take a 5-0 lead. Those final runs ended up being the difference in the game.

The Lady Govs scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning to make the game closer. Lana Carpenter knocked in the first two runs with a triple that scored Ella Houston and Erin Curry. Ella Brooke Barefield knocked in the third run with her RBI single to centerfield. That cut the lead to 5-3.

Marion responded in the top of the fourth by adding two more runs.

Wallace replied in the bottom of the inning with two runs of their own. Both runs scored on a two- RBI double from Libby Buchanan. That was the end of the scoring for Wallace.

Marion tacked on three more—one in the sixth and two in the seventh.

The Lady Govs are now10-8 in conference play and in fifth place.
