Lady Govs drop conference series to Central

Rebekah steals second

It was not a good conference series for the Wallace Lady Govs. Against the Central Alabama Trojans, Wallace lost all four games this week. That includes the doubleheader on Friday afternoon when Wallace fell 7-5 in game one and  8-6 in game two.

Despite the losses, head coach David Dews is not totally disappointed.

"I thought we were right there in all four games," Dews said. We just couldn't figure out a way to make some plays there at the end. We couldn't get the breaks right there at the end. I thought we played well. Central just made a few more plays than we did.

"Last year they blew us out," Dews told his team afterwards. "This year we were close. That shows the improvement we've made. We've learned a lot more as a team. I like our flow. I like the way we are playing together as a team. We made a few mistakes here and there, but we played much cleaner today. We're getting there. We've just got to stay with it."

All of the games were close. Game one on Friday saw four lead changes before Central rallied late to take the lead.

Wallace took its final lead in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single from Erin Curry. That put the Lady Govs up 5-4. But that was it.

Central scored two runs in the top of the sixth to retake the lead, and added an insurance run in the seventh on a homerun from Grayson Tucker.

It was a similar occurrence in game two. The game was tied twice and there were three lead changes.

The Lady Govs only trailed by a single run, 6-5 after the fifth inning. But Central added two runs in the top of the seventh to put some distance between the two teams. The big blow was an RBI double once again from Tucker. The Lady Govs were only able to get one of those runs back in the bottom of the seventh. That came when Ella Brooke Barefield scored on an error after reaching base on a double.

Next week is a huge week for Wallace. The Lady Govs will take on conference leading Enterprise State. Thursday's games will be at home while Saturday's games will be in Enterprise. The Lady Govs are now 11-10 overall and 7-4 in conference play.
