When the Wallace Lady Govs played Thomas College last week, they quickly won the first game of doubleheader 9-0. Then they promptly lost game two.
Tuesday afternoon, the Lady Govs were once again playing the Night Hawks, this time at home. It looked like history was going to repeat itself. Wallace easily won the first game 9-0 and quickly fell behind 3-0 in the second game.
But this time history would have to wait. Last time out, Coach David Dews said the team was complacent. They were satisfied with their 9-0 win and didn't make any adjustments. Â This time the Lady Govs fought back, Once down 5-1, Wallace began a slow but steady comeback that eventually led to a 13-5 win for the Lady Govs, their second run-rule victory of the day.
How did they do it? The biggest adjustment came in pitching. After
Ella Houston allowed all five runs in 1 2/3 innings, Reagan Chenault came in and shut the Night Hawks down—literally. Despite the Hawks having replaced nearly it's entire lineup from the first game, Chenault handled the bigger and more powerful lineup with ease. It appeared as though the Hawks had replaced its JV lineup with the varsity squad,
"I was just trying to stay calm and focus," said Chenault who is only 4'11", or as the Wallace trainer called her, 'the little engine that could.' Â "I was able to slow down and take my time. It felt really good as the team was able to come back and win."
Wallace was able to score single runs in first, second, and third innings, but just couldn't get that big hit to put them over the hump.
That is until the fourth inning. That's when
Elly Castle connected for a three-run homer that gave the Lady Govs their first lead of the game, Wallace would later add another run on a steal of home and the team led 7-5 after four innings.
"When I stepped to the plate, I told myself if it was there, I was going to swing at it," Castle said. "I was just glad that homerun pumped our team up."
And it didn't stop there. The Lady Govs tacked on two more runs in the fifth inning. Their final two runs came in the sixth on a homerun from
Lana Carpenter. It was Carpenter's first collegiate homerun.
"I was just glad to get that first one out of the way," Carpenter said. "I was even more proud of the win."
In the first game,
Kaitlyn Conner got the job done on the mound and her teammates gave her plenty of offensive support. Conner pitched five scoreless innings in a game that ended early due to the run rule.
While Conner was doing her job on the mound, the Lady Govs got the offense going early and never let up. It was an exciting brand of softball as the Lady Govs were hitting, bunting, and stealing their way around the bases.
Libby Buchanan got things started with a bunt single and then promptly stole second base.
Rebekah Rowell brought her home with a single to centerfield.
Elly Castle was next with a triple over the centerfielder's head that scored Castle. A single from Curry plated the third run and the Lady Govs were off to a 3-0 lead.
Wallace scored its five runs in the second inning on a bunt RBI single from Buchanan, a two RBI double from Castle, a strike out and an error off the bat of Curry, and finally and an RBI ground out from
Ella Houston.
The final run came on a sacrifice fly from Curry in the third.
"I was happy with the way we played today," Dews said, whose team is now 3-1 on the season. "We've got a big tournament coming up this weekend in Oxford and there are a lot of teams there."
