Lady Govs ready for season opener

The Wallace Lady Govs are finally about to get the 2025 softball season underway, opening the 2025 season Wednesday afternoon against Thomas University JV in Thomasville, Georgia.

"The girls are excited to play. I'm excited to play," said Wallace head coach David Dews. "Everybody has been working hard. We want to play somebody other than ourselves. We've been preparing hard and I'm excited to see how we look."

The one thing Dews says stands out about this year's team is maturity—both on and off the field. They are making better decisions. Much of that maturity comes from the sophomores who he will be counting on heavily.

"We've had really good sophomore leadership," Dews said. "And the thing is, they all bring something different to the table. Katlyn Conner is our number one pitcher. She is our stud and we will be relying on her heavily. She has really grown up since last season."

"We've got Erin Curry, our returning catcher from last year. The kid is as tough a ball player as I have ever seen with her physical toughness. Elly Castle at short stop, Shaylei Mock at third base, and Aimee Senn have all looked good this fall. But the other thing is, we've got some really talented freshmen to go along with that. They started out just trying to learn, but they have done a really good job of taking everything in."

As for what the public can expect from his Lady Govs this season, Dews said, "We're not going to be a real flashy type team. Our kids understand they are going to have to be tougher. They're going to have to compete much harder than some of the teams we're going to play. They are going to be a little bit more talented. But that's kind of what we're known for anyway. I don't mind that. I want to see our kids grind. I want to see them compete with everything they've got. Just leave it all out there on the field. We're going to have to find ways to win."

Dews said he doesn't really have a set starting lineup going into the season. He plans on getting a lot of players into the game.

He also said he doesn't know a whole lot about Thomas University at this point, but there is an added benefit to playing them. Thomas University is a four-year school and it gives them an opportunity to scout some of the Lady Govs for the future.

After Wednesday's scheduled opening, the Lady Govs will play their home next Tuesday against this same Thomas University team. That doubleheader is set to get underway at noon.
