ALABASTER -- The Lady Govs just couldn't get many hits. The only runs they scored came on a three-run homer from Savannah Jenkins. But that wasn't nearly enough as St. Johns River downed the Lady Govs 9-3 in the opening round of the NJCAA Division II South District Tournament.

Trailing 4-0 in the fourth inning, the Jenkins homer got the Lady Govs back in the game. All of the damage was done with two outs. That's when Olivia Elliott and Erin Curry both reached base on infield singles. Then Jenkins connected for the deep drive over the fence in centerfield. That brought the Govs to within one run, 4-3.

But just as quickly as Wallace closed the gap, it quickly disappeared. The Vikings hit four home runs in this game. One of them came immediately in the bottom of the fourth. Caylee Edler homered to get one of the runs back. Princess Arrendondo then singled in another run, and a third run scored on a wild pitch.

The Vikings tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to close out the scoring. The Lady Govs never mounted a serious threat after the Jenkins homer.

"They are a well assembled ball club," Wallace coach David Dews said of the Vikings. "They hit the ball really well. We closed the gap, but we just couldn't get over the hump. We'll just have to come back tomorrow and try to rebound."

Due to heavy lightning in the area, the Lady Govs second game was moved to 11:00 Friday morning. They will play Lake Sumter, who lost in an extra-inning walk-off thriller against Marion Military Institute.
