Wallace softball coach David Dews didn't sugar coat things when he talked to his Lady Govs after they played the Central Alabama Trojans.
"We've got to win out," Dews said. "if we're going to have any chance (of making it to the district tournament), then we're going to have to win every game. And we still may need some help."
All of this is because the Lady Govs lost both games of their doubleheader to Central on Saturday afternoon. Wallace fell 16-10 in game one and lost game two 8-4. After losing twice to Central Thursday afternoon, that means Central swept the four-game series.
If the Lady Govs are to have any chance, they will have to take four games from Chattahoochee Valley, four games from Enterprise State, and four from LBW.
"We can still do this," Dews told his team. "It's not going to be easy, but we can do this."
"Just don't give up," Dews implored his team. "Don't check out on me. It means a lot to me personally."
Despite falling behind early in the first game, the Lady Govs never did give up. In the fourth inning, Wallace trailed 12-2 and the game was in danger of ending early due to the 10-run rule. But Wallace rallied to score two runs in the bottom of the fourth, three in the fifth, and two more in the sixth to extend the game.
The problem was, the Lady Govs couldn't stop Central from scoring. The Trojans scored in every single inning of the contest, putting up crooked numbers in most of them. Central scored three in the first and second innings, two in the third, four in the fourth, one in the fifth, two in the sixth, and one in the seventh.
Among the few bright spots for the Govs in game one was
Olivia Elliott who hit two home runs, going 2-for-3 with a walk and three RBIs.
Joanna Marshall went 3-5 and scored three runs.
Marshall and Elliott both stayed hot in the second game. Marshall went 3-for-3 and Elliott hit another homerun. This time it was a three-run shot, her 15
th of the season.
Hannah Buchan also had a solo home run.
Despite those efforts, Central never trailed in the game. The Trojans led 6-0 in the third inning and never looked back.
The Govs begin their must win series of games this Thursday afternoon when they host Chattahoochee Valley.
