"Nobody gave us a chance. Everybody had counted us out. But now we're in! This means everything."
Those were the words of Wallace Lady Gov assistant coach Brianna Griffiths shortly after the Lady Govs clinched a spot in the upcoming NJCAA District Tournament. The Lady Govs earned that spot by sweeping the LBW Lady Saints 3-2 and 14-9 Thursday afternoon in Andalusia.
Reached on the bus while headed back to Dothan, Griffiths said "At one point we were 8-16. We didn't have a chance. But we had several talks with the team individually and as a group. Coach (David) Dews asked them if they could come together and play as a team. Once they started playing for each other and not for themselves, then everything changed. Good things began to happen."
Griffiths said this win was a little more special because it was on the road.
"It was so nice to clinch this spot at their place," she said. "But we're not finished. Now we've got to take care of business at our place Saturday."
The Lady Govs are now 17-13 in conference play and 22-20 overall after winning 10 in a row. Wallace will close out the regular season this Saturday at home against LBW. Then they will head to Alabaster May 9-12 for a chance to earn a spot in the NJCAA National Tournament.Â
