It took three home runs and two extra innings for the Wallace Lady Govs to earn a sweep over the Coastal Alabama-North Coyotes. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth, Olivia Elliott singled to left field to give the Lady Govs a 7-6 win.
Elliott also played a big role in the game one win. Not only was she the winning pitcher, she also hit her team-leading 11th home run of the year which propelled the Lady Govs to a 10-2 win in just five innings.
"Olivia came up big for us today—both hitting and pitching," Coach David Dews said. "We needed these wins. We're trying to get back in the race."
Elliott's homer in game one came in the third inning. With the game tied 1-1, it began when Elly Castle reached base on an error, Joanna Marshall reached on a bunt single, and Reagan Tomlin singled to load the bases. Elliot unloaded them with a grand slam to centerfield, putting Wallace up 5-1.
After that, the Lady Govs never trailed. While Coastal got two of the runs back in the fourth inning, Wallace tacked on three more in the bottom of the fourth and two in the fifth to end the game. It was an RBI ground out by Elliott that ended the game.
Game two was a back-and-forth affair. The Govs got a solo homer from Castle and a three-run homer from Erin Curry, both in the third inning. A third homer was hit by Savannah Jenkins in the sixth inning.
Wallace went into the seventh inning up 6-4 and only needing to get three outs. But Coastal quickly got three consecutive hits, the third one was an RBI single from Reanna Johnson. Two batters later Shelby Allen tied the game 6-6 with her RBI single to centerfield. Another runner was thrown out at the plate to keep the game tied.
Two more innings went by before the Lady Govs were able to score in the ninth inning. Castle singled and went to second on an error. Marshall walked and Tomlin bunted to load the bases. That's when Elliott singled to left field to end the game.
The Lady Govs are now 5-9 in conference play and 10-16 overall. The two teams will complete their conference series Saturday in Brewton.
