Lady Govs drop two

Bishop State sweeps Lady Govs

In game one, the Bishop State Wildcats built a big lead, but in the end had to hold on to earn a 9-6 victory.

Then in game two, the Wallace Lady Govs built a sizable lead but couldn't hold on to it as Bishop ended up winning the game 9-4.

"We didn't play very well today," Wallace coach David Dews said. "Our pitching didn't hold up, and we didn't get the timely hits when we needed them. We'll keep trying to clean things up, but we've got to play better."

In that first game, the blowout began in the second inning. Bishop sent 10 runners to the plate and the Wildcats scored six runs.  The runs scored on a two-RBI double from Jessica Farrer, an RBI single from Emma Wilson, and a three-RBI double from Kayley Weaver.

The Lady Govs got one of those runs back in the bottom of the inning when Olivia Elliott hit a home run, only to be answered by another run from Bishop in the top of the fourth.

The Lady Govs appeared to be dead in the water, but found some life in the fifth inning. That's when they scored five runs. A couple of walks started the inning before Joanna Marshall hit an RBI single to left field. Three batters later came the big blow. With the bases loaded, Erin Curry nailed a grand slam just inside the foul pole in leftfield. That cut the Bishop lead to just one, 7-6.

However, Bishop tacked on a couple of insurance runs in the top of the seventh and put the game away.

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Lady Govs scored three runs in the first inning to take the lead. All three runs scored without the benefit of a single hit. Elly Castle, Joanna Marshall, and Reagan Tomlin all walked to load the bases. Castle scored on a wild pitch. Marshall scored on an error, and Tomlin scored on wild pitch.

The lead ballooned to 4-0 in the third inning. That's when Tomlin tripled to right field and later scored on a double from Curry.

But Bishop got all four of those runs back plus one more in the fifth. Only two of the runs scored on a hit. That was a two-RBI single from Harmony Stafford. The other runs score on a bases loaded walk and a pair of RBI groundouts.

Any hopes of a Gov comeback ended in the fifth inning. That' because the Wildcats tacked on four more runs. The biggest hit was a three-run homer from Stafford.

The Lady Govs are now 6-12 on the season, 1-5 in conference play. Wallace and Bishop are scheduled to complete their conference series Saturday in Mobile.
