Pitching drill

Lady Govs testing their limits

New Wallace softball coach David Dews said one of his goals is to push his players. He wants them to believe they are capable of doing more than they thought they could. One of his pitching drills is designed to just that.

Instead of going through a regular pitching routine, Dews has his players work on a specific pitch, say a fastball, for a specific amount of time. Once that time is up, the pitcher must immediately go through exercise routines, such as jumping jacks or lunges. Once that is complete, the player immediately returns to pitching to work on another pitch. The routine is repeated several times.

Dews told his players this is designed to build toughness - both physical and mental. He says if the players are tired in a game, they won't think about it. They will only think about the task at hand--which in this case is pitching.
